A+ for Amélie

A+ for Amélie

The best movie in human history is Amélie.

Hands down.

I recently had the pleasure of watching it again, through fresh eyes, with the older kids.

Unbelievable to think it's almost 25 years old.

Here are five reasons why you should rewatch it today:

1. It celebrates the wackiness of introverts.

Amélie hears stories in her head, catastrophises scenarios, imagines the unimaginable and finds it very satisfying, all while wanting to shut people out forever and lay in bed staring at the ceiling.

The main message of Amélie is compassion serves as a powerful antidote to loneliness.

She makes it a mission to assist others and, in doing so, uncovers the joys of love.

2. The characters.

Yes, the characters, full stop.

Not just Amélie herself, but those that surround her.
- Assiduous Nino
- Kind hearted Lucien
- Tormenting Collignon

All with aspects that are innocent, naïve, quirky, optimistic, philanthropic, mischievous - the list goes on!

3. It's like a fairy tale, with graphic moments.

It makes you want to dance in the street.

Cuddle and kiss your loved ones.

Appreciate every blade of grass.

Smile at strangers.

Sing out loud at the top of your lungs.

4. The cinematography.

Panning, tracking, close ups, clever camera angles, overheads, clever overlays and lighting.

I'm no film pro, but suddenly, I want to be.

5. Cleverly written.

One of my favourite quotes from Amélie is 'I like to look for things no one else catches'.

Guess what? Me too!

I remember asking someone about how they ended up with a Band-Aid on their right thumb after a Zoom meeting and their jaw dropping to the floor.

I'll notice if you're left-handed, remember number plates from the last five cars I've passed on the road and can usually tell one of the kids where their left sock is without even making eye contact.

And, what's better. It lures me in with the French dialogue and language.

My mind is still secure. Amélie for the win.
