Jill of None
Aug 27, 2024Polymath: a person of comprehensive knowledge or learning.
A word that has been on my mind for a while now.
It's also known as a Jack or Jill of All Trades.
Often, we are surrounded by messages of narrowing down, focusing, and honing in while also receiving messages of widening learning and knowledge.
Confusing right?
I know that I am better when I focus on one thing at a time, but for a very long time, it has felt like it's stifled my broader appetite.
Now, this has exceedingly been a me problem.
Maybe I'm born after my time?
Before the 17th century, this phrase was used to refer to someone who had a range of skills and abilities. Often used as a compliment to admire folk with multiple talents.

I know I could definitely fit under the Jack and Jill and Polymath labels.
Multiple interests and passions.
Multiple trains of thoughts with an urge to follow them all....NOW!
I'm led to believe it doesn't do much for my focus and getting shit done.
And there's an element of truth in that very statement.
I know I can become a featherbrained, chaotic mess of talking the talk and not living it through.
It's a trait I'm not terribly proud of.
It's a trait that has seen me failing forward and taking what feels like FOREVER to reach a point of
I have screenshots cluttering my phone of quotes reminding me that patience grows time, slow down to speed up, focus and determination will get me where I want to go etc, etc.
So why do we appear to be so anti-Jack, Jill, and their little old hill?
I do not have a direct answer to these questions.
So, in essence, this story leaves a big to be continued.
