The Red X Under the Pecan Tree
with Holly Totten
Season One
Episode Eighteen
“I remembered when my son was younger. Maybe second or third grade. He had strung a fishing wire across the door with those thumbtacks for a trip line. He would trip us as we would go in and out.
The line was taken out years ago, but the thumbtacks still remained. So it kind broke my heart to pull them out".

Episode Summary
When I sat down with Holly she was currently in the middle of a wild and dusty wind storm in her 1910 home just outside Whitney, Texas. It was not only the wind keeping her company. She lives alongside dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses, and more in the farmhouse where she raised her family (and now grandbabies) over the last 28 years. Within this conversation listen as Linda and Holly chat about:
- The houses in Holly's childhood share a similar resemblance to the old farmhouse today, including one of her favourites in Georgia with a wraparound porch, seven fireplaces and an eerie intrigue that fell over the house once darkness hit
- Having the freedom to go and explore, leaving after breakfast and being back by the time the street lights came on
- 13 different schools in 12 years
- Beaming with pride and watching her children grow
Holly is an absolute delight and her warmth and character shines through within this episode.
This episode has now been transformed into a chapter of its very own inside the book series Stories with a Sunday Roast. It weaves together the memories that were shared during the podcast conversations with my personal experiences.
Unlike the podcast, the carefully crafted stories and mouth-watering descriptions of roasty meals will transport you to another level as you turn the pages.
